Caboolture to Wamuran Rail Trail
Ease into two wheels on the Caboolture to Wamuran Rail Trail, a 10.5km mostly off-road pathway following the former railway corridor.
With gentle grades and an easy-going route, it’s a great option for beginners, families and anyone looking to build confidence on a bike without tackling steep hills or busy roads.
The trail gives you plenty of opportunities to take your time, enjoy the surrounding scenery and stop along the way. Once you reach Wamuran, refuel with a visit to CJ’s Pastries for something sweet or savoury. If you’re riding on a weekend, you can also make a day of it with a visit to the Caboolture Country Markets.
Insider tip: Start your ride from Toohey Street, Caboolture and take your time. This is one for enjoying the journey rather than chasing a personal best.
Petrie to Kippa-Ring Shared Pathway
The 13km Petrie to Kippa-Ring Shared Pathway is suited to recreational riders, walkers, prams and mobility scooters, making it an easy option for a relaxed day out.
Following the rail line, the pathway takes you through a mix of suburban bushland and local neighbourhoods, with opportunities to stop along the way.
Take a break at Lake Eden, Sweeney Reserve, John Oxley Reserve or Wyllie Park, and keep an eye out for colourful local murals along the route.
With rest stops, water fountains and public toilets available at the train stations, it’s easy to plan a comfortable ride without having to carry everything with you.
And because the pathway follows the rail line, you’ll find cafés and restaurants dotted along the way when it’s time to refuel.
Insider tip: You don’t have to tackle the whole 13km. Choose a section that suits your group and turn your ride into a shorter out-and-back adventure.
Access the trail from Wyllie Park, Petrie.
Moreton Bay Cycleway
For a classic Moreton Bay ride, follow the Moreton Bay Cycleway from Scarborough Beach towards the Ted Smout Memorial Bridge.
The 11km route combines coastal paths, parks, ocean breezes and no shortage of stops for coffee or bite to eat.
Along the way, you can make stops at Scarborough Beach, Pirate Park, Settlement Cove Lagoon, Redcliffe Jetty and the HMQS Gayundah wreck.
With so many cafés, restaurants and bars along the waterfront, you can easily turn your ride into a full day out.
Start with a coffee at Landing bakery before continuing towards Redcliffe, stop for lunch at Yabbey Road, then settle in for a drink at The Belvedere. Or reverse the route and finish your ride with something sweet from Miss Sprinkles.
Insider tip: Build in extra time for waterfront stops, photos and a coffee break rather than trying to cover the distance as quickly as possible.
Access the trail from Landsborough Avenue, Scarborough.
Ferny Grove to Samford Rail Trail
Swap the suburbs for rolling farmland on the 8.3km Ferny Grove to Samford Rail Trail.
Beginning at Ferny Grove Station, the route heads through Samford Conservation Park before arriving in the charming village of Samford.
Following the former rail corridor, the trail offers a scenic ride through the hinterland, with farmland and greenery providing a change of scenery from the city. Make it all the way to Samford and reward yourself with a visit to Kenilworth Samford Bakery for a well-earned bite.
Insider tip: Start at Ferny Grove Station so you can leave the car behind and make the most of the rail-to-trail experience.
Bongaree to Woorim Water Loop
For a longer ride with water views, tackle the 30km Bongaree to Woorim Water Loop.
Starting at Bongaree, follow the waterfront path before continuing past Dux Creek and along Bribie Island’s waterways and coastal areas.
The loop brings you back to your original starting point, making it an easy option if you’d rather not worry about organising transport from the other end of your ride.
Insider tip: Make a day of it and plan a waterfront stop along the way. Pack some snacks and water and allow plenty of time to enjoy the island at a leisurely pace.
