Eric was born in Redcliffe and is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG). He combines painting and portraiture, through his photographic practice, traversing tribal folklore and modern gestures of masculinity and mateship through intimate scenarios reserved for family and close friends.
Eric Bridgeman's maternal heritage is positioned within the Yuri Alaiku clan of Simbu Province, PNG. The dominant focus of his work involves the discussion of social-cultural issues and often involves the depiction of figures set among a particular cultural domain, in an expansive practice including photography, video, sculpture, installation and performance. More recently, he has developed a series of collaborative projects which are carried out with and among his people from PNG’s Simbu Province. These projects focus on the crafting and design of traditional shields from his family’s region in a bid to preserve and rejuvenate cultural practices among his people.
