Millen Farm

Within walking distance of Samford Village and only 30 minutes from Brisbane city lies a 5,000sqm block of land called Millen Farm. Founded, established and managed by the community, for the community, Millen Farm has a strong focus on creating a sustainable, alternative food system.

Please note: Millen Farm is not open to the public for visits, please read further for information on tours.

Millen Farm near Brisbane

Although a not-for-profit business, Millen Farm operates as a commercial farm with the aim to maximise underutilised private and public land to establish a financially and ecologically sustainable urban farming system near Brisbane.

Millen Farm also produces a range of local, organic, seasonal produce that is available for purchase at the weekly Real Farmers’ Market held on-site or via a box subscription service managed by the Farmer. The farm also aims to raise awareness of current food production systems, food transportation and nutrition.

The word ‘Millen’ comes from the language of the local Toorbul tribe and translates as ‘place of feasting’, an appropriate name for Samford, with its fertile ground and history of agriculture.

The Farmer & The Team

Millen Farm is owned and operated by local, Arran Heidemann. Taught to compost by his grandmother at a young age, Arran grew up with a love for growing plants and a talent for all things natural. After working for years on building sites and recognising a large amount of waste, Arran decided to sign up for a permaculture design certificate with world-renowned Permaculture consultant, designer and teacher, Geoff Lawton. After obtaining his certificate from Zaytuna Farm: Home of the Permaculture Research Institute, Arran started his own permaculture market garden before becoming the first Millen Farm farmer.

Arran now works with a team of dedicated volunteers who all have a vast and varied skill set.

Educational Programs & Tours

With a tagline that states ‘Learn, Grow, Feast’ it’s really no surprise that the team at Millen Farm host educational programs to provide a bridge between more traditional agricultural systems and natural farming practices. This provides the opportunity to enhance the capacity to make choices between a range of organic agricultural systems (permaculture, biodynamics, organics, biological) rather than a ‘one system is best’ approach. Exciting courses in what to do with excess harvest including pickling, preserving and cooking are offered as well as the plethora of agricultural workshops that are hosted on occasion.

The farm is also open for group tours thanks to Millen Farm farmer himself, Arran. During this 2-hour tour, Arran will teach you all you need to know about the history of Millen Farm, systems of design, soil preparation, water sources and irrigation methods, organic pest control, growing organic produce, distribution channels and future plans. At the conclusion of the tour, you will be offered the opportunity to purchase some freshly picked Millen Farm produce.

Millen Farm Tours are $150/group with a maximum number of 15 participants and are available on:

  • Mon to Thu: 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm
  • Fri: 8:00 am to 3:00 pm
